A laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light. The light emitted by the LightSheer diode laser is well absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicles (figure 1). Prior to the procedure, the treatment area is shaved (figure 2). During the procedure the upper layer of the skin is compressed and cooled with the special cooling handpiece (figure 3). This procedure protects skin and makes the procedure more effective. Then the laser pulses for a fraction of a second, just long enough to heat up the hair and destroy the follicle's ability to re-grow (figure 4). The result: permanent hair reduction in the treated area.

Q: Why should I use the LightSheer Diode Laser System rather than the methods I've been using for years?

A: The LightSheer Diode Laser System's design provides for enhanced comfort during treatment, minimal risk of infection, speed and accuracy. Since the system uses a unique cooling handpiece, it minimizes skin irritation that other methods may create. Since it is non-invasive (no needles to penetrate the skin), the risk of introducing bacteria into the skin is reduced. Because the system is fast, it allows for larger areas to be treated, considerably increasing the efficiency of the hair removal process, which allows more patients to be treated during a typical day. Finally, the LightSheer Diode Laser is a precise instrument that can be adjusted to damage only the hair follicle while minimally affecting the surrounding skin.

Q: Does the LightSheer work on tanned or different skin colors?

A: The LightSheer diode laser system safely and effectively treats all skin types (Fitzpatrick Skin Types I-VI) as well as tanned skin. For darker skin types and people with tans, appropriate fluences are generally lower and appropriate pulse widths are generally longer to prevent damage to the epidermis. Using the appropriate treatment parameters, however, people with all skin types can benefit from laser hair removal with the LightSheer.

Q: What Are The Advantages 0f The LightSheer System?

A: There are three main advantages to LightSheer hair removal technology: Comfort, speed and accuracy. Since the LightSheer has a unique cooling hand piece, it does not cause the kind of skin irritation that other methods may create. It allows for larger areas to be treated, considerably increasing the efficacy of the hair removal process. Finally, the LightSheer is a precise instrument that can be adjusted to the exact parameters that will disable only the hair follicle, minimally affecting the surrounding skin.

Q: How Many Treatments Are Recommended?

A: The laser works by disabling hair follicles that are actively producing hair (anagen phase) at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter the growth phase at different times, additional treatments will be necessary to disable all hair follicles in a given area. It usually involves 3-6 treatments over the year for the body and 3-8 treatments for facial areas. Our treatments are offered in packages of 3 and after completion most people experience an average 50-85% permanent reduction of hair. Due to the cyclical nature of hair growth, and the body's ability to reproduce new hair follicles, follow-up treatments may be necessary, depending upon individual desired results. Some individuals may only require a single treatment to possibly reduce the volume and thickness of hair.

Q: How Long Does The Laser Hair Removal Take?

A: Each laser pulse will treat an area of 3/8 of an inch or 9x9rnm. The amount of time needed depends on the size of area treated. As an example, the lip can be treated in less than 10 minutes, bikini/underarms together take 45 minutes, full legs 1.5 to 2 hours, full back/shoulders/neck takes 2 hours. These are average treatment times and will vary due to height and weight of the patient.
